Ultrasound on a dog

Ultrasound

Ultrasonography is a widely used, non-invasive, and pain-free diagnostic imaging technique in veterinary care. It works by sending sound waves into a specific area of the body, and the echoes from these waves create real-time moving images of your pet’s internal organs. This procedure is often performed on awake patients with minimal to no sedation, depending on the comfort level of each patient. Ultrasound is a safe and gentle procedure that helps us gather valuable information about your pet’s health without the need for invasive procedures or general anesthesia.

At Atlantic Veterinary Internal Medicine & Oncology, we offer advanced ultrasound services, including abdominal and thoracic (chest) ultrasounds, as well as ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration and biopsy. Our highly skilled specialists perform these procedures to ensure the most accurate diagnoses and most effective treatments.

Dog getting an ultrasound

A veterinarian may recommend an ultrasound for several reasons including:

  • Diagnostic evaluation of symptoms such as vomiting or diarrhea, decreased appetite, abdominal pain, unexplained weight loss, and changes in urination.

  • Organ assessment for inflammation, enlargement, tumors, cysts, or other structural abnormalities.

  • Cancer screening and staging.

  • Fluid accumulation in the chest or abdomen.

  • Foreign body detection to identify swallowed objects causing an intestinal blockage.

  • Routine monitoring for chronic conditions or post-surgical evaluation.

  • Ultrasound-guided procedures to collect samples for further analysis
